5 Loft Conversion Ideas to Increase Space in Your Home

Opening up your loft space can make a lot of sense when you need to increase valuable home space. Getting the most out of every inch of your loft conversion takes some thought and planning but allows you to create sensational spaces that enhance the look, and the value, of your home.

Add a mezzanine

If you have plenty of head height but not so much floor space, consider adding a mezzanine level. Create a small mezzanine sleeping area with storage below in a guest bedroom. For a child’s room, get creative with access to the mezzanine by creating a climbing wall or adding a slide. The combination of clever storage and extra space eliminates the need for free-standing furniture and really maximises the room space.

Design with glass

If you have a straightforward angled roof, get creative with the gable end to create the illusion of space through light. Glazing the entire gable end creates a stunning feature and makes the most of a previously hidden view. Adding a roof light over the stairs is another way to flood light throughout your home space.

Frame a feature

The restricted head height in your loft might seem to limit your choices. But turn an eaves space to your advantage by creating a bespoke en-suite with freestanding bath. If you’re intending to use the space for leisure or work purposes, add a skylight and position a sewing table or desk for optimum use of the space and the light.

Be bespoke with storage

Bespoke joinery and clever design can squeeze plenty of additional storage into your loft extension. Building into the eaves is an obvious choice, but in a conventional gabled loft, turn convention on its head and section off an area for head height wardrobes to create a stunning dressing room. Alternatively, divide the space with a storage unit built at 90 degrees to the wall, creating a room divider between office and leisure space or a bedroom and bathroom.

Open up the outdoors

If outdoor space is what you crave, try sacrificing some loft space to create a roof terrace. Check with your planning office first as some areas have more restrictions than others, but an indoor/outdoor space can look sensational. Imagine waking up and enjoying coffee on the terrace with a breathtaking view. Or create an amazing entertaining space with an outdoor hot tub.
